“Shining” how not to think of Stephen King’s well-known bestseller or the cult film set in the mystical and spooky Overlook Hotel. Yet, in this case, excluding the affinity of place – the hotel – , the shimmeriness spoken of, has little or nothing in common with the demonic portents of Kubrickian memory. It is a term called to define a deeper aesthetic concept than mere and mere shine, reflection or physical reaction to an external light and other than the reflecting object. It is a property of the thing or person , an intrinsic, original and original gift, the presence in itself of a higher spirit, of a substantial and essential difference. Works of design, like things of art, so-called “artifacts,” are not simple things and, even less, mere things, they are endowed with that quid , that primordial impetus which is, precisely, glitter. The challenge issued to the artists and designers selected (Angelo Andrea Citro, Tommaso Dognazzi, Emanuele Gregolin, Opificio Emblema, Nicola Pellegrino, Tina Sgrò, Fernando Spano) for this edition of Venice Design Week at Hotel Savoia & Jolanda is to represent it, to reveal it to us, through their creative approach and their careful, sensitive and painstaking actions, this invisible and unique attribute capable of vivify both matter and form.
