Perleri and Mascareri’s Professions

Pearls are details of elegance and personalization of clothing that were also used as coins of exchange.
The art of Mascareri is one of the oldest professions in Venice, dating back to 1271. The use of the mask in the city was frequent, but only in the fifteenth century became a symbol of the Venetian Carnival.

Arts and Professions in Venice: Oresi, Calegheri, Laneri

There were many schools in Venice and Marin Sanudo counted over two hundred of them in 1501. The oldest and most important schools, those of San Marco and the Misericordia, had been founded three centuries earlier also with the help of the Dominican and Franciscan friars. However, it seems that a school dedicated to the Casselleri (carpenters specialised in the construction of chests and trunks) already existed in the 10th century. It can be said that in Venice every person who practised an art or a trade was also proudly part of his own school, which had a more or less imposing and rich seat. Each person could receive the protection of his brothers, who belonged to the same art and were united in terms of mutual assistance in compliance with the statute, the Mariegola.
We will pass through Campo San Tomà where the Pixel City Itinerary of Augmented Reality crosses and it will be natural to connect the “calegheri” of the past with the young designers of today by experimenting virtual reality with Instagram.

VDW 2021 Jewelry Selection Exhibition

DAZZLE ME! is the theme of VDW Jewelry Selection 2021, the jewelry selection scheduled for the eleventh edition of Venice Design Week. The exhibition is located on the second floor of the charming Ca’ Pisani Design Hotel in Venice and displays the results of the eighth edition of the international competition. The theme is a clear exhortation, marked by the exclamation point, to create a piece of jewelry that can attract the attention and surprise the viewer. The theme challenges the designers to play with light, colors, reflections of a mirror and everything that can surprise the observer.

Venice Pixel City. Discover Augmented Reality in the City

During the Design Week, QR codes will be scattered around the city of Venice, allowing special projects by both national and international designers to be displayed using an Instagram filter. The application scenario is the city, in a world where social life is no longer only physical but also virtual, the digital element is the engine of progress, also from an urban point of view, and can represent a tool to explore new ways of creating public spaces. This is a unique, both physical and digital exhibition.

The “foresti” in Venice

After the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks, Venice became a free port, a place where artisans, merchants and knights converged. Venice welcomed them and allowed them to reside there, to build places of workship, schools of devotion and to develop flourishing activities. Evidence of these overseas ‘foreigners’ are still visible in the city: Albanians, Armenians, Dalmatians/Slavonians and Maltese knights.
We will pass by Fondamenta dei Furlani where the Pixel City Itinerary of Augmented Reality crosses and the connection between the “furlani” of the past and the virtual architecture that can be activated with Instagram will be natural.

Insula_dei Luminari Ca’ D’Oro Guided Tour

From the constant condition of impartiality between space and time, from the Brodsky’s memory thought in Fondamenta degli Incurabili, the installation Insula_dei Luminari was created for Ca’ d’Oro in Venice, with the intention of experimenting how much of this pre-established supremacy can be questioned through the installation of luminous sculptures of light and shadow, sound and words. Thus, a metaphorical space is delimited, inhabited by illuminating objects – the Luminari – which places before the spectator a multiplicity of readings, seeking to build unexpected, poetic and affective relationships with the physical and interior space.

Venice and the Silk Roads

The Testori de pani de seda, also called ‘samiteri’ (from samis: the precious Byzantine fabrics) in the city, were the craftsmen who produced silk and gold fabrics and constituted one of the most prestigious Arts in the city. Marco Polo was among the first western travellers to import precious fabrics from the East, contributing to the wealth of the Venetian merchants. Weavers from Lucca, who arrived in large numbers into the lagoon at the beginning of the 14th century, also gave a substantial contribution to the development of Venetian silk art.
